"Rebuilding Relationships after Traumatic Brain Injury": This videotape focuses on brain injury related changes, which often have a negative impact on relationships. Strategies for fostering social relationships ranging from social skills training programs for individuals with traumatic brain injury to respite for families to public education are discussed. "Life Goes On": Inside the lives of families of youth with brain injuries. Two families talk openly and frankly about the effects of their child's brain injury over time. Darnell was injured as a teenager in a motor vehicle crash and is now living at home and attending college. Narrated by his parents and sister, they talk honestly about their emotional trauma early after the injury, the process of grieving, his recovery and their struggle to accept this different person who is their son and brother. Ariel's family has a different experience as their daughter was injured when 17 months old. Now a teenager, her story illustrates the developmental impact of an injury during childhood. Her parents and sister talk about the grieving process, the effects on their marriage, and their fears and hopes for the future. "Life Goes On" gives personal insights into the family dynamics and grieving process. It will be helpful to families as well as for the professionals who counsel and support them. "Understanding Brain Injury: Acute Hospitalization- A Guide for Family and Friends": This video presents how a psychologist who sustained a brain injury and his wife coped, both practically and emotionally. Their children also describe their reactions to his acute injury and subsequent treatment and how they dealt with this change in their family. The video discusses the importance of both education and emotional support. It can be very useful for education and therapy with both persons with brain injury and families to elicit emotion and provide coping stategies. (29 minutes, New Medico Head Injury System, 1990)
