Please JOIN US for Tuesdays at the Capitol
Join us every Tuesday, now through May 4, 2010 at the Minnesota State Capitol. Each Tuesday during the legislative session, the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota along with its partner, the Minnesota Consortium of Citizens with Disabilities, will be at the Capitol to help people share their stories about the importance of disability services with legislators and to ensure we have a strong presence at the Capitol. All you have to do is let us know you are coming and then just show up! We'll work with you and take you around the Capitol so that you can be involved in the important decisions that being made about supports and services for people with brain injury.

  • 10 a.m. - Welcome and introduction in the State Office Building Basement Cafeteria
  • 10:30 - Meet with you legislators and share your personal story
  • 12 p.m. - Lunch in the Department of Transportation Cafeteria
  • 1 - Attend hearings, meet with legislators and watch the legislative process

Brain Injury Awareness Month and the Speakers Bureau
March is Brain Injury Awareness Month and volunteers in the Association's Speakers Bureau can help maximize brain injury awareness. The speakers are free, informative, and inspiring but, they need your help to get the word out. If you are part of a group or organization – or you know of a group or organization – who would like a speaker for March, or any other month contact Anna Karena at 612-378-2742 or 800-669-6442.

Art-A-Whirl Call for Artists
Art-A-WhirlThe Brain Injury Association of Minnesota is excited to host the Second Annual Create-Ability art show as a part of the Northeast Minneapolis annual Art-A-Whirl – May 14 through 16. We’re putting out a call for artists. Acceptable art must be created by an individual with acquired or traumatic brain injury and ideally portray a message of hope and healing. Judging will be based on originality, quality and artistic merit.

Artwork must be:

  • Of "manageable" weight
  • Securely stabilized, no loose elements and safe for public viewing.

Mayo Clinic Seventeenth Annual Brain Injury Conference
The 2010 Brain Injury Conference will take place on Friday, June 18 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and will feature Lee Woodruff and other dynamic keynote speakers who will discuss the impact of brain injury on functioning in the family, demographic and epidemiologic trends in brain injury ethics, and promotion of meaningful health behavior change. Several breakout sessions on family adjustments, practice standards, safety, adult foster care, acute assessment, and interdisciplinary rehabilitation approaches will be offered.

Tubman offers a full continuum of domestic violence services, legal assistance, mental and chemical health counseling, parenting and family support services and community education. The agency serves over 50,000 people in Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties each year.

Tubman and the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota have worked together to serve individuals with brain injury for the past four years.

Position Summary
Tubman is seeking a full time director for a collaborative project with the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota to guide organizational change at both agencies and assist in the development of a national model to serve victims of family violence with brain injury.

Apartment living for people with a brain injury and/or physical disability
Each resident in Accessible Space Inc’s (ASI) Assisted Living Service has their own apartment. Staff is available 24 hours a day to assist with physical cares, do medication reminders, and monitor health and safety issues. Housing is subsidized at the six locations in the Twin Cities, Rochester and Grand Rapids. MA funding pays for services at these sites with a Class F Home Care license. We also have opportunities for Adult Foster care in Shared Living Homes where accessible housing is subsidized. Rent is about 30 percent of their income so residents generally have more spending money. Locations in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs.
