25th Annual Conference for Professionals in Brain Injury
Celebrating the Journey
Join professionals, caregivers, advocates and providers from around the state April 29 and 30 at the Crown Plaza St. Paul Riverfront Hotel in St. Paul. This year’s event, "Celebrating the Journey," addresses the constantly changing field of brain injury technology and the growing understanding of the brain and behaviors in research. It also features several dynamic speakers who will cover a variety of topics related to community-based, educational, cultural and medical aspects of brain injury care, services and supports.

Art-A-Whirl Call for Artists
The Brain Injury Association of Minnesota is excited to host the Second Annual Create-Ability art show as a part of the Northeast Minneapolis annual Art-A-Whirl – May 14 through 16. We’re putting out a call for artists. Acceptable art must be created by an individual with acquired or traumatic brain injury and ideally portray a message of hope and healing. Judging will be based on originality, quality and artistic merit.

Artwork must be:

• Of "manageable" weight
• Securely stabilized, no loose elements and safe for public viewing.

Midwest Advocacy Project Now Accepting Applications
The Brain Injury Association of Minnesota is partnering with the Mayo Clinic TBI Model System in a research study to identify how to best teach advocacy to people touched by TBI to improve their health and that of their communities. This groundbreaking study is expected to advance the science of TBI research.

If you are at least 18 years old and a person or family member/significant other affected by a moderate to severe TBI a year or more ago, you are invited to contact us about participating in this research study.

Has Your Child or Teenager Sustained a Sports/Recreational Concussion?
If your child or teenager/young adult sustained a brain injury through a sports concussion (baseball or other sport) or a recreational accident with or without a helmet (biking, scooter, skateboarding, etc.) the Public Awareness department would like to hear form you. With a focus on sports/recreational concussions we are looking for kids and young adults (with family involvement) who would be willing to help others by sharing their personal story of brain injury through family media interviews. Bike and skating season is here! Keep yourself and your family safe with ASTM, ANSI, and CPSC-approved bike ($12.99) and skate/scooter ($15.99) helmets from the Minnesota Safety Council– at well below retail price! While helmets can't prevent crashes and falls, they do reduce the risk of head injury by 85 percent and brain injury by 88 percent. If all bikers wore helmets, one death could be prevented every day and one head injury would be prevented every four minutes! Mayo Clinic Seventeenth Annual Brain Injury Conference
The 2010 Brain Injury Conference will take place on Friday, June 18 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and will feature Lee Woodruff and other dynamic keynote speakers who will discuss the impact of brain injury on functioning in the family, demographic and epidemiologic trends in brain injury ethics, and promotion of meaningful health behavior change. Several breakout sessions on family adjustments, practice standards, safety, adult foster care, acute assessment, and interdisciplinary rehabilitation approaches will be offered.
