Education

The Brain Injury Association of Minnesota provides free or low-cost education opportunities for all people affected by brain injury, including family and friends, and training opportunities for the professionals who support them. Our Brain Injury Basics workshops are a primary education opportunity for individuals, families and friends.

Brain Injury Basics

Persons affected by brain injury can attend the Association's "Brain Injury Basics" workshop series free of charge. These are held on a rotating schedule throughout the year:

  • Brain Injury Basics I: An Introduction
    Brain Injury Basics I is the Association's cornerstone class. The instructors of this program define brain injury, discuss common symptoms of brain injury, suggest ways for persons with brain injury to compensate for their injuries, and give tips about how to relate to a person who has sustained a brain injury. This introductory class is useful for both people living with brain injury and the people who support them.

    Brain Injury Basics I will take place at the following locations/dates:
    • August 19 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital, 559 Capitol Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55103 in the 7th Floor Conference Room.
    • August 26 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Austin Public Library, 323 4th Ave NE, Austin, MN
    • September 22 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. at Miller Dwan Auditorium, 502 East 2nd Street, Duluth.

  • Brain Injury Basics II: Adjustment to Disability
    This class addresses the life change that occurs with brain injury, including major stages and challenges of emotional adjustment. Adjustment to disability is a life-long process. It may be described as a series of stages or major tasks, which may not always flow in a neat and orderly fashion. Individuals progress through the stages at different rates. Emotional aspects of disability can be a major factor in future outcomes.

    This class will be offered October 21 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital, 559 Capitol Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55103 in the 7th Floor Conference Room.

  • Brain Injury Basics III: Caregiving
    Brain injury not only impacts the person who sustained the injury, but also all individuals in their lives. These individuals play an important role in enhancing quality of life and promoting adjustment to life after a loved one's brain injury through their caregiving. Learn how brain injury impacts the caregiver and their efforts at caregiving.

    This class will be offered November 18, 2008 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. at the Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital, 559 Capitol Blvd, St. Paul, MN 55103 in the 7th Floor Conference Room.

  • Sports Concussion Conference - September 22
    There is increasing recognition of the frequency and seriousness of concussion occurring in the sports setting. The intent of this presentation will be to highlight the pathophysiology and signs/symptoms of concussive injury and the crucial role that cognitive evaluation plays in its management. To this point, the use of computerized neurocognitive testing in the evaluation and management of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) will be reviewed. Attendees will learn of outcome data regarding rates of recovery and risk factors pertaining to sports related concussion. Finally there will information provided regarding new treatments and rehabilitation protocols following MTBI and sports related concussion.

    Join us on September 22 from 8 - 11:30 a.m. as symposium presenter, Michael Collins, chieft clinical director of ImPACT Applications, Inc, talks about sports concussions. The cost is $65 to attend, and CEU's are available.
